Your Lease Turn-In Check List

So, your lease term is coming to an end. This can be an exciting and overwhelming time. If this is your first lease, or it’s been a long time since you’ve been through the lease-end process, it can be a little daunting. Whether you’re planning to lease one of the new models in our inventory or you want to purchase your next model, the Client leasing team can walk you through the process. Unless you plan to buy out your lease, there are several steps you need to take prior to turning your vehicle in. It’s important to start thinking about these things early, so that you don’t find yourself paying additional fees. Taking care of these steps ahead of time can save you time and money when you turn in your vehicle.
Mind Your Mileage
At this point in your lease term, you may be nearing your mileage limit. For drivers who have well-loved their lease vehicles, it’s easy to rack up the miles. Going over your mileage is one of the easiest ways to incur additional fees when you turn in your lease, so make sure you are limiting your driving to avoid these fees. Typical allowances for mileage are 12,000 miles per year, but consult your lease agreement and keep an eye on the odometer to stay mindful in the final months of your lease. Sometimes you can turn your leased vehicle in early if you’re worried about going over the allowed mileage.
Replace Worn Tires
Many drivers make the mistake of turning their leased vehicle in with worn-out tires, which can incur more fees. Lease agreements often include how much tire tread must be left when you turn in your vehicle. Prior to the end of your lease, we suggest you bring your vehicle in for a tire check-up. Our service team can evaluate the wear pattern and check to make sure your tire’s tread meets the minimum requirements of your lease agreement. If your tires are below the required tread depth, we can replace those worn tires to save you money on expensive fees when it’s time to turn in your vehicle.
Inspect for Damage
Minor scratches and dents are a part of car ownership and most lease agreements won’t penalize you for normal wear and tear. However, you should inspect your vehicle for any damage that might be deemed excessive. Your agreement should outline what is and isn’t acceptable. If you have any major damage to the vehicle, it’s best to address that damage before you turn the vehicle in, otherwise, you’ll end up paying hefty fees for repairs.
Clean and Detail
This is one of the final steps before turning in your leased vehicle. You’ll want to thoroughly clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Remove any pet hair, stains, or debris from the interior. It’s also a good idea to remove most of your personal items. If you’re going to be turning your leased vehicle in and hopping right into a new model, it will be easier to switch vehicles if you don’t have many personal items. Check places like the glove box, center console, and trunk to make sure you haven’t left anything behind. Wash the outside as well, so that when you go to turn the vehicle in, the process is as quick as possible.
